The Profile of a Victim Who Should Never Have Been One

Alex Pretti was no stranger. He worked as an intensive care nurse at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Hospital. His colleagues described him as caring, kind, and devoted to his patients. Last weekend, more than 200 healthcare professionals gathered at the scene of his murder, laying flowers and candles to pay tribute to the man they knew. A woman in a medical scrub, who had worked with him, could not hold back her tears in front of the cameras. He was a good man, she said, asking not to be named for fear of reprisals from the federal government. None of this makes sense. Her trembling voice, her courage to speak out despite her fear—all of this speaks to the humanity that was lost that day.

Moreover, Pretti had a legal permit to carry a firearm in Minnesota, a constitutional right recognized by the Supreme Court in 2022. He had never drawn that weapon that day. The videos clearly show him holding his phone, not a gun. Law enforcement experts are questioning the deadly use of force, noting that Pretti did not appear to be actively threatening the officers. Brian Higgins, an adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a former police chief, pointed out that there are many questions that need to be answered. “This individual didn’t even appear to have his hand on his firearm at any point,” he said. So really, there was no threat. He was simply carrying it. That’s all. Just an American citizen exercising his constitutional rights, killed for doing so.

When I think of Alex Pretti, I don’t see a political statistic. I see a human being. I see a man who cared for others, who chose to dedicate his life to alleviating suffering. And now he’s dead. Killed by those who claim to defend America. There is something deeply wrong with this country when a nurse who helps people can be shot down in the street like a dog, and when those who killed him are protected by the nation’s highest authority. It is a heart-wrenching tragedy. It is an injustice that cries out for vengeance. It is a shame that we will all collectively bear until justice is served.

A Context of Already Explosive Tensions

Pretti’s death did not occur in a vacuum. Minneapolis was already under extreme strain following another incident earlier this month. On January 7, another American citizen, Renee Good, was shot and killed by an immigration agent after he approached her in her parked vehicle. Trump administration officials claimed she was attempting to run over the agent with her vehicle, but other observers noted that witness video suggests she was trying to drive away from the agent who shot her. Local and state law enforcement agencies are investigating to determine whether the agent who killed Good violated Minnesota law.

The U.S. Department of Justice has withdrawn its cooperation from this investigation, and at least a dozen federal prosecutors have said they are resigning over the Justice Department’s handling of Good’s death. At Minnesota’s request, a federal judge issued a temporary order Saturday evening prohibiting the Trump administration from destroying or altering evidence related to Pretti’s death. CEOs of some of Minnesota’s largest companies, including Target, Cargill, and Best Buy, released a letter calling for an immediate de-escalation of tensions and for state, local, and federal officials to work together to find real solutions.
