From Fierce Opponent to Zealous Disciple

Let’s rewind to 2016. JD Vance isn’t yet the vice president we know today. He’s a young, successful author—the one who wrote Hillbilly Elegy, the book that claimed to explain the heartland of America. And back then, Vance hated Trump. He said so loud and clear. He called him an idiot, repugnant, and even compared the future president to Hitler in private messages. He voted for an independent candidate rather than Trump. Vance was then what’s known as a “never-Trump guy”—a Republican who categorically refused to support this man whom he deemed dangerous to America.

The Calculated Transformation of an Opportunist

But something changes. Or rather, someone changes. In 2021, Vance decides to enter politics. He wants to become a senator from Ohio. And suddenly, miraculously, all his convictions evaporate. Trump is no longer a danger. Trump is a genius. Trump is the leader America needs. Vance deletes his old critical tweets, issues a public apology, and transforms himself into one of the most ardent defenders of Trumpism. This spectacular about-face is not the result of a political epiphany. It was pure and simple calculation. Vance realized that to have a place in the modern Republican Party, he had to bow down to Trump. So he bowed down. And he waited.

How can anyone look at themselves in the mirror after that? How can anyone claim to have principles when they abandon them so easily? Vance knew who Trump was. He said so himself, in black and white. And yet, he chose to turn a blind eye, to remain silent, to lie. For power. Just for power. It disgusts me deeply—this ability to betray one’s own convictions without even batting an eye.
