A Disturbing Discovery in the Early Morning

The intersection of Bathurst Street and Glencairn Avenue, in the heart of Toronto, was the scene of a troubling incident overnight. The Mishkan Avraham Congregation, a place of worship where families in the community typically gather, was vandalized.

Law enforcement in the Canadian city responded quickly after receiving reports of damage to this religious institution. According to initial findings at the scene, a window of the synagogue was shattered by a projectile, the exact nature of which remains unknown.

Fortunately, this nighttime incident resulted in no casualties, and no injuries were reported by the authorities. The damage, which was purely property damage, is believed to have been caused in the middle of the night, at a time when the building was likely unoccupied.

The Hate Crime Unit is leading the investigation

Given the sensitive nature of the target, law enforcement immediately adjusted its response protocol. The Toronto Police Service’s Hate Crime Unit has officially taken the lead in the investigation, highlighting the potentially targeted nature of this act.

For now, investigators handling the case are facing a lack of direct visual evidence regarding the perpetrator(s) of this act of vandalism. Police have confirmed that no description of a potential suspect is currently available.

The investigation will have to rely on any available surveillance footage from the neighborhood or witness statements from residents to try to shed light on the exact sequence of events.

Strong Reaction from Israeli Consular Authorities

News of this incident quickly sparked strong reactions within the diplomatic corps. Idit Shamir, representative of the Consulate General of Israel in Toronto and for Western Canada, spoke out to express her outrage in an official statement, noting that a similar incident occurred “yesterday in Montreal.”

In her statement, the Consul General “strongly condemns the antisemitic attack against the Mishkan Avraham Congregation in Toronto, where an object was thrown at the synagogue, shattering a window and causing damage to the building.”

Her public message was accompanied by an urgent appeal to Canadian authorities: “A synagogue should never become a crime scene. A community should never have to wonder which Jewish institution will be attacked next. The time for symbolic gestures is over. Canada must demonstrate, through concrete actions, that antisemitic violence will be met with the full force of the law.”

The warning issued by Israel’s ambassador to Canada

The condemnations were not limited to the local consular level. On Saturday afternoon, Israel’s ambassador to Canada, Iddo Moed, also took to the X platform to warn of the increasing frequency of such incidents.

The diplomat described the damage to the religious building as “dismaying, alarming, disgusting, and shameful beyond words! Today in Toronto, another Jewish community has been targeted!” he wrote in his online post.

Expanding his remarks to address the broader political and social climate, Iddo Moed issued an explicit warning: “Let there be no misunderstanding: demonizing Israel, delegitimizing Israel, and dehumanizing Israel leads to unchecked intimidation, extreme violence, and even destruction.”

Unambiguous Support from the City of Toronto

On the local political scene, the fallout from this incident prompted elected officials to take a public stance to show their solidarity. A Toronto city councilor relayed the consulate’s comments to reassure his constituents.

Noting that a window at the synagogue had been smashed overnight near Bathurst and Glencairn Avenues, and confirming that the Hate Crimes Unit was indeed leading the investigation, the elected official shared his perspective on his personal X account.

“No one in this city should have to wonder if their place of worship is safe,” the councilor stated solemnly. He then concluded his message with a firm rejection of intolerance: “Anti-Semitism has no place in Toronto, and an attack on one community is an attack on all of us.”
